Storm Signs Kraayeveld to Offer Sheet

As has been rumored on the RebKell message boards, the Storm has signed New York Liberty forward Cathrine Kraayeveld to an offer sheet. Because Kraayeveld is a restricted free agent, the Liberty has until Monday to decide whether to match the offer or allow Kraayeveld to join the Storm. Kraayeveld, 27, is a native of the Seattle suburbs who played at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland before attending the University of Oregon.

After being waived by San Antonio during training camp of her rookie season, Kraayeveld became a fixture in New York, starting all 34 games for the playoff-bound Liberty the last two years. Just six other players in the WNBA started every game in both 2007 and 2008. Last season, Kraayeveld averaged 9.6 points and a career-high 6.1 rebounds per game.

A 6-4 forward, Kraayeveld is unique in her ability to stretch the defense with her shooting range. She was seventh in the WNBA in three-pointers (62) in 2008, and ranked 13th in the league in three-point percentage (.376) after shooting a career-best 41.1 percent from downtown the previous year. Kraayeveld helped pace a Liberty offense that led the league in threes.

Kraayeveld is one of three Washingtonians currently playing in the WNBA, a group that also includes the Storm's Kristen O'Neill. The Storm will know by Monday whether Kraayeveld will be returning home to continue her career.

I can't believe NY would give her up, but I would LOVE to have Kraayeveld play for the Storm! I enjoyed watching her play UW as a Duck (an opponent you loved to hate).

Wow, this would be excellent. Catherine is a really good player but just as exciting is the fact that she's from around here. This would be GREAT! Hope this goes thru!

We are going to need her, From what I heard (the person I heard from has never been wrong before) I'm pretty sure LJ is signing with another team. This will surely suck; I wouldn't blame her for not coming to the WNBA this summer, but to sign with some other team on the 10th anniversary will be a blow to Storm fans.

I would like to have Catherine on the team but if we lose LJ, we need a lot more than Catherine! Please don't leave LJ!!

Kevin what is the roster size limit for teams in 2009....did it stay at 13 (11 A + 2 IA) or is the rumor about 11 player total limit true????

I think they are holding off announcing LJ is not returning so ticket sales won't hit the dust. If she was coming back they would have said so, no reason not too. It's hard to think that all the things LJ has said over the years about Seattle and Storm fans is going to end up just having been lip service. Yes we will need more then Kraayeveld, hopefully Swoopes is talking Tina into coming on to the Storm. If LJ thinks going to another team that has a better chance of another championship then she forgot that last season the Storm was #2 in the league, and her not being in the playoffs was the reason we got knocked out. I hope I end up eating my words and LJ does come back, but I'm gearing up for disappointment.

Kevin,

It's Monday, what's the status of Kraayeveld? Did NY match our offer or is she signed with the Storm?

Never mind, the Libs are reporting that they signed her to a three year deal...
