Ely Healthy

Good news on Shyra Ely. The Storm's basketball staff got in touch with Ely from Cyprus, and it appears her injury sounded worse in translation than it really was.

Ely reports colliding with a teammate in last week's game and suffering whiplash. She's been cleared to play and is already back at practice for her K.V. Imperial AEL team in preparation for Thursday's completion of the aggregate series with Rivasecopolis.

Ely Link

The Actionled blog has a translation of a local article indicating Storm forward Shyra Ely may have been injured in last week's EuroCup playoff win over Rivasecopolis. Ely played just 17 minutes and apparently suffered an injury just after halftime.

I've asked around but haven't gotten any more information. I'll pass it along if I do.

Imperial Remains Unbeaten

In the only international game Thursday featuring a Storm player, K.V. Imperial AEL went to Spain to defeat Gran Canaria 69-63 in a defensive struggle. Gran Canaria was held to 35.3 percent shooting. Imperial got balanced scoring with four players scoring double-figures, including Storm forward Shyra Ely, who had 12 points and 13 rebounds in 33 minutes.

At 2-0, Gran Canaria is all alone atop Group F and in good shape to advance. The top two teams advance from each group in the EuroCup format along with the eight best third-place teams for a 32-team elimination round. Last year Imperial went 2-4 to finish third in its group.

Storm at T-Mobile Coverage Jam

Laura Sgrecci/Storm Photos

Storm and WNBA partner T-Mobile held its annual "T-Mobile Coverage Jam" Thursday at T-Mobile USA headquarters in Factoria. Led by Cole Brodman Chief Technology and Innovation Officer and Neville Ray, SVP of Engineering & Operations, the Coverage Jam is a business update meeting that also includes a basketball tournament for all employees.

Helping out with the event were Storm forward Shyra Ely, who interned in the Marketing/Sponsorships department for T-Mobile last off-season, 1150 AM KKNW play-by-play broadcaster Dick Fain and Doppler.

Ely helped out with some honorary coaching duties, while Fain called the action on the floor and Doppler provided entertainment.

Despite the June Seattle drizzle, the Storm helped make it a special event for T-Mobile employees.

Today's Random Storm Fact

Did you know that newly re-signed Storm forward Shyra Ely and Voice of the Sonics Kevin Calabro both attended the same high school, Ben Davis in Indianapolis, Ind.?

Me neither until I was googling about Ely's high-school exploits (she was Gatorade's National High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year, which is today's other random Storm fact) and came across Wikipedia's list of notable Ben Davis alumni. I figure that's worth passing along.
